My research focuses on Kant, Early Modern philosophy, Ethics and Aesthetics. I am especially interested in questions about the emotions. What is the nature of emotions? And what role do they play in our lives, for example in moral motivation and in our response to art?

Understanding Early Modern perspectives on the emotions involves sorting through terminological and conceptual differences but the accounts and arguments to be found are well worth the effort. I have an independent interest in a set of questions in Early Modern theoretical philosophy.

I like to approach philosophical questions both from a historical and from a contemporary perspective, and I believe in the value of an ongoing dialog between contemporary philosophy and the history of philosophy.
