Checklist for Applicants

U.S. Domestic Resident Applicants (including those educated abroad)

Application Deadline for domestic is December 15

Submit the following to the Office of the Bursar:

  • Application Fee

Submit the following directly to the Department of Philosophy:

  • Official transcripts of all previous college and university course work                                                        - Please have these sent either to Sycamore Hall 026, 1033 E Third St., Bloomington, IN or electronically to the graduate student coordinator's email.
  • An official report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results
    - Please use the "School Code" 1324 and the "Department Code" 2801 to ensure that the GRE scores are sent directly to the department

Submit following using the IU electronic application system
(link at the bottom of this page):

  • A complete Application Form for Admission and Financial Aid, which includes:
    • An online application (all applicants are automatically considered for financial aid)
    • Three letters of recommendation
  • A 300- to 500-word statement of purpose
  • Official transcripts of all previous college and university course work
  • One philosophical paper written recently by the applicant for a course or seminar
  • A personal resume

International Applicants

International Application Deadline is December 1.

Submit the following to the Office of International Admissions:

  • A complete International Application for Admission
  • The application fee (do not send to the bursar)
  • Two passport-size photos (with your name on the back)
  • Original academic records or certified (notarized or attested) copies
  • An official TOEFL report (this does not apply to native citizens of English-speaking   countries)
  • An official report of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE)                                                              - Please use the "School Code" 1324 and the "Department Code" 2801 to ensure that the GRE scores are sent directly to the department
  • Three letters of recommendation

  • A 300- to 500-word statement of purpose
  • One paper in philosophy written recently by the applicant for a course or seminar
